- Jim_ShoeExplorer IIIf you want to know about the weather where you're headed, check out Weatherbase. It's a free app. It won't tell you what tomorrow's weather will be like, but it will tell you what its been like in the city or town where you're headed by month, over the last several years. It also tells you the elevation, which seems to have a major effect on the weather. Be sure to select Fahrenheit or Celsius at the top of the first page.
- Thunder_MountaiExplorer III lived the first 30 years of my life in Dallas. I can't imagine icebirding in Dallas. Guess you would be ok until around Thanksgiving. Do you have any clue how bad the traffic in the Metroplex?
- 8ntw8tnExplorerWe stay at a park about 60 miles north of San Antonio. This will be our 5th season there. It has gotten as low as 20 degrees a couple of times, but usually stays above freezing at night and 50's or 60's during the day. Close enough to San Antonio or Austin if we'd like to go (usually don't) and rural enough to make it feel homey. I'd recommend reservations, especially for any time after the first of the year. From what I've seen the parks can get pretty full. My site is reserved for the next five years! Both Austin and San Antonio have a major airport, though for my money, traveling around and through San Antonio is much easier than Austin. Hope this helps, and good luck with your choice.
- RbertalottoExplorerI'm a big fan of 60-65 during the day and 30-40 at night.... Just about perfect for me.
One requirement is that I'm within 1hour of a major airport as I travel every week for business. - WanderlostNomad IIWe don't refer to our "snowbirds" as such. We call 'em Winter Texans.
LOFAT36, Junction is actually northwest of San Antonio on I-10, and it's just under two hours away.
Yes, it can get cold around San Antonio, but for the most part, winter is in the 30s/40s at night and 50s/60s during the day. The normal high/low in January is 62/39 F. As long as you're prepared for chilly weather, you'll be just fine.
Welcome to Texas. - LOFAT36ExplorerWe stayed in Junction, Texas (about 3 hours north of San Antonio) around Christmas 2013. Woke up in the morning & no water. Frozen. Waited until the sun came up for awhile & looked out the window & it had thawed out & split my outside water filter. Stayed over Christmas in San Antonio (ski jackets every day) and headed back to Yuma. Never again. Loved the Riverwalk though.
- wa8yxmExplorer IIIBe aware of one thing... Even though you are in the SUNNY SOUTH much of Texas freezes on cold nights. Have seen it personally (Had to wait for my Sewer hose to thaw before I could check out one AM) this was off I-10 (north Tx) however.
I'm stuck in S.E. GA where it usually does NOT freeze.. Still I take precautions in the winter Got to work on those some they need cleaning and polishing, Thanks for the reminder. - 2gypsies1Explorer IIIDepends on the months you're planning but basically, why those big cities in winter?
Head down to Rockport or further south. - Canadian_RainbiExplorerIn San Antonio, we have stayed at http://brauniglakervresort.com/ a couple of times and found it excellent. Nice dog walk areas, very helpful staff and volunteers. A bit out of town but with the freeway system it doesn't take long to get into the city. (Which by the way we like very much). If we HAD to stay the winter in Texas, this would be our choice.
- tjfogelbergExplorerI am not a snow bird but want to put a plug in for Travelers World in San Antonio. I visited the park last Oct (beginning to get ready to be a part-time snow bird). It is a well run park with a small pool and nice common areas. I enjoyed being on the bike path that takes you into the city and River Walk. Great shopping and restaurants nearby. Winters are very mild (check weather.com). Make reservations. After Dec 1 they get very busy. Right next to a golf course, my site backed up to the golf course area, very quiet. It is an urban type setting if you like that.
