Flat tow GMC Canyon

I would like to know if you can flat tow a 2004 GMC Canyon SLE Z71 Automatic. Any help will be appreciated as I want to buy this vehicle if I can tow it flat. Thx Don

owner's manual is the only valid source IMHO. of course since it is well out of warranty you can't go back on mfr. if it blows up.

  • I have a 2010 Z-71 4x4. I believe all Z71 are 4x4 and can be towed 4 down. I have been towing mine since new. As was said before needs to be a 4x4
  • Had a 2 wheel drive 01 s-10 that I used for a toad. Drive line disconnect was installed for a satisfactory solution, but it had its issues in the 20000 miles I toad it. Tuning the cable action is critical.
I now have a 2012 4 wheel drive canyon set up for towing and expect a much improved satisfaction level. First use will be in 2 weeks. We plan to tow it to Alaska and back this summer.
The lighter weight than the full size PU,s is a nice solution.

  • 2004-2012 Canyon/Colorado Automatic can be flat towed IF it is 4wd. There is a neutral position in the transfer case.
If it is a 2wd, then GM says no. I don't see the 2wd listed in any of the dinghy guides either. If they are not listed, then they are generally not flat towable without modification. You'll need to try other options such as the tranny pump or driveline disconnect, if there is such a thing for rear wheel drive vehicles.

    Check out Motorhome.com's Dinghy Guides.

This is one of several reasons why we bought a 2012 4wd Canyon.

    Hope that helps!

  • I think any vehicle can be "altered" to flat tow. In your case, I believe you would need a lube pump attached to your trans.
