Flat Towing Truck

Would like to hear from anyone Flat Towing a pick-up truck with a Trike in the bed. Which truck do you have (year, make & model)? How long is the bed? What year make model of Trike? Appreciate your thoughts at the beginning of our search for a Trike and Truck. Thank you for your time.

Edited to Add - This is the type of Lift we plan to use.Lift

rampage lift, looks like about 500 lbs, + or -.
    Total weight, 6500 lbs. +
Towbar required, 10,000 lb. capacity. No problem
Motorhome towing capacity, also 10K. For me, that would be a major problem!
    Good luck.

I'm not sure I understand part of your post. Are you saying it would be a major problem for you or you think it would be a major problem if you were me? Just looking for clarification.

Sorry about not being perfectly clear. FOR ME, a motorhome with 10K towing capacity would be a major problem, in that I would have to buy a diesel pusher to get that capacity, and that just ain't gonna happen. There is NO room in the budget for such a purchase!

    2chiefsRus,
It's been done many times. The person/member either on here or IRV2 goes by the username "Dupdyke". He's installed and worked with many, many trucks, short beds, long beds etc. fitting the Rampage in both regular versions and Trike adapted versions.

We're doing exactly what you're asking minus the TRIKE part. We tow a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab 4x4 with a 6 1/2' bed. The Rampage itself, is right close to 300 lbs. That's not including the Trike adapter. I just read a few days ago of a Rampage lift, WITH A TRIKE ADAPATER for sale on a motorcycle forum. Don't know if you've already bought one or not.

Many folks comment about the Rampage not putting any weight on the tail gate, even while loading. Well, for us short bed folks, the Rampage hangs over the tail gate anyways so, for us, the gate is completely removed, while the Rampage is in the bed. Why carry it and potentially damage it (maybe backing around a corner etc.) if you don't' need to and, while the Rampage is on there, it's useless anyways.

The Rampage lift is a pretty good lift. I've used it now for about 3 years and there's been no problems what so ever. I'm one of those that likes to make life easy. I designed and built a cart that fits my Rampage to a TEE. When the Rampage is not in use, it resides on that cart. It takes me approximately 2-3 minutes to completely transfer and secure the Rampage from the cart to the truck, and ready for use.

When done using it, it takes the same amount of time to transfer it from the truck to the cart. The truck is back in service as a truck and has full use of the bed in no time.
    Scott

Because many many of us, like mowermech, have gas coaches and the pickup alone is more than our rigs should be towing, let alone adding a payload of trike and loading device.

You probably have 350-or-more Diesel HP, six speed Allison, air ride, etc. Would not be a problem of any size, let alone a major one, for a coach like that.

  • That loading system looks pretty slick. With the weight of trike and loading system a 2500/3500 is a good idea. IIRC any of the big 3 can be towed four down if 4WD and the transfer case can be shifted to neutral. With a toad braking system and adequate hitch and tow bar towing a heavy pickup should not be an issue with your coach.

What kind of trike? A Harley trike is 1000+ pounds and over 8 feet long. Not a problem for a full size long bed pickup, but it could get interesting loading and unloading.

Sorry I forgot to add the link for the lift we intend to use. I have edited the original post to add that link now.
