Flow Pur water softener

Has anyone ever used say solar salt or any other than table salt? I have been using table salt as suggested but it only last a few days then I must regenerate. I'm fine with regenerating every 1.5-2 weeks but this 3-4 days is getting old.

  • Water in AZ where we wintered was over 50 GPG. My test strips only went up to 50 GPG so don't know how hard it really was. We used about 13 gallons of water per day and I had to regenerate every 10 days. Unless you are using a lot more water than we did and if your hardness is in the range of ours, 3 to 4 days sounds too often.
When I checked with the manufacturer a few years ago HERE - not the distributor - he was selling a reload package of the media for $35.
BTW The FloPur guy said not to use bleach because it would shorten the media life. To store off it season he said to regenerate it but leave the salt solution in place until ready to use the softener again.
  • The bleach has ruined your resin bed.
You need to replace the resin and use something like "Res-Care" next time you want to clean it.
  • Salt is NaCl with varying (but low) levels of impurities. Table salt is the purest.

I did pour about a cup of bleach in and let it sit for a few days then back flushed. It worked fine for 2days then it slowly faded away. 4days later it was if it wasn't even installed.. Maybe new media is in order.

1 cup and let it sit for a few days :H

To sanitize you only need 1/4 cup and then it is used during regen cycle (1/4 cup vs the salt----otherwise normal regen)
And this is for long term storage.

Backflushing helps to mechanically clean resins.....S/B done twice a year

Think you have damaged the resin beads with that amount/duration of bleach.

You never stated which FloPur Unit you have ....Mark 8000 or RV-Pro 10000?
    New resin...........$49/$59

  • You may need to clean the resin beads with a resin cleaner. After a while they can become coated with manganese, iron, organic compounds, making them less efficent.

    How old is it?

When was last time you backflushed to fluff resin beads up?

My 8000 grain On-The-Go using 1 lb of table salt for regen would last a week fr 2 adults in Alamogordo NW (well water from Tularosa Basin-------VERY HARD water source)

    It's 3 years old
I back flushed the last time beginning of November

Very hard water here in Az

Yes the water is hard here in AZ

If you have a Mark 8000 it should treat 800 gallons before needing regen (8000 gr/10 gr hardness---800 gallons)
    4 days is 200 gallons a day !!!!!

Even if hardness was 12 gr. that is 670 gallons before regen.
4 days would be 167 gallons a day.

You either are not regenerating long enough, resins are coated up (Iron), resin beads are damaged (Chlorinated water) OR resin beads have been lost.

Different forms of salt won't matter......
