June is not too hot here on the NC coast. July /August would be tough camping except in the mountains. Can't advise on fly vs drive, that's a personal decision based on cost, time, desires.

If you need info at some point on Wilmington or Pinehurst I may be able to help some. Very familiar with Wilmington. Live about 30 miles from there now. Lived in Pinehurst area for about 3 years but it has been a while.
