June is not usually so bad especially early June. I would drive and since you said time is unlimited, It would allow you more time to spend in each location. Of the areas you mentioned, I like the Ashville area. Its 5 hours from the coast and you are right on the edge of some great mountains. But I like the mountains better than the coast with the exception of Charleston, which I would highly recommend. I prefer Charleston over Savannah (not taking away from Savannah)
