We lived in Tidewater Virginia for three years and I was so glad to get back to Washington. My first day there in early June, going out to work at 07:15, it was foggy, 81 degrees

We got about 12" of rain between 3:00 pm and 8:00 am the next day.
I think you were experiencing what we call a Hurricane on the east coast!
Just saying, I think there is a little exaggeration going on here about weather. Not saying it didn't happen but one day does not mean it is typical.
I've lived on a barrier island in NC for 30 years. July and August can be miserable but the other 10 months make up for it.
