Folding Bike?

Every time I see an add for those folding bikes that Camping World sells I am intrigued.

Any one use them? Thoughts? The good bad and the ugly

Just looking at pictures the seat looks very low. Does it raise up? Is it just my imagination that it looks too low?

Thanks,
Robert
  • We have a pair of 3 speeds in the hub, 20" Dahon bikes with bags. They fold up real small and have more adjustment than the Camping World bikes. Good old bikes but I might sell them.

We also have a pair of 6 speed 20" Camping World bikes with bags that are way too large. They work OK and with the additional gears are used more than the Dahons.

We also use hybrid full size bikes for longer runs.

The 12 speed Camping World bikes have 22" tires, just try to find a replacement tire, or better yet have Camping World try to find a tire. What I found was that if a tire fails you need to scrap the bike.
  • We have a couple of Citizen folders. Cheap and reliable and fine for rides of 10 miles. We haven't folded them in a long time though, we ended up leaving them unfolded and carried in our One Up USA tray rack on the back of our toad.

Before we had our motorhome we had a travel trailer pulled by a crewcab F-150; the unfolded bikes fit in the back seat compartment with the seat folded up.
  • My Wife and I rode our 3-speed Dahon's hundreds of miles when we were sailors. We would pull into port and get on our bikes to ride around the towns. She is 5'9" and I was 6'4" and we looked funny on the small wheel bikes but they worked out great and would fold up and were stored under the bow. I don't know what CW sells but I'm guessing they are Dahon knockoff's.
  • We bought a couple of these Downtube The 8FS model. Funny, think I have a pic of ours at the same Grand Canyon location.

10 years on & they are holding up well. Both can fit in the back of the truck with the seats down but usually travel inside the 5er in a ready to ride state.

Changed the skinny seats for wide one more comfortable for older butts & when the time comes for a tire change the plan is to get a fatter tire better suited for the gravel roads & paths of CGs.
  • We have 2 folding bikes but don't think they are sold at CW.

Bought a Tern and Novara @ REI and am pretty happy with both although I prefer the Tern sooooooooo ya know what the man is riding;). Both have multiple quality gears; weigh about 25 lbs., fit nicely in the rear of a rental mini van or 5 door and the back of our forthcoming TT. Pretty sure the Novara folds better than the Tern.

Slowly but surely making mods to them in the form of tires, seats and already added a back fender and basket to one of em.
  • For a folding bike, I'd also take a look at Brompton or Dahon for brands as well. Those are more expensive, but they are a much better bike for long rides (be it road, some trails, etc.)
  • Rob,

We have a pair of them. We fold them up and keep them under the dinette where they stay clean and safe while we travel.

The seats are adjustable but might be short if you are taller than about 5-10. A 6' friend has borrowed and did OK.

The wheel base is a little strange when compared to a normal bike, and this has caused both of us to get thrown on occasion when stopping or starting (or when our one of our dogs has to greet us).

Do they work as bicycles and beat the hell out of walking in a large crampground - You bet. Equip them with locks and bells. We never had one stolen, but they have been messed with at a KOA. The bell is because oblivious wandering people are not used to the silent approach.

    Matt
