I suspect the overly squeamish would have totally freaked out if they had been with me in my tent camping days. Picking up a fish fillet, steak, etc. that had fallen on the ground and giving it a rinse in the nearby creek or lake before putting it back on the fire was not an uncommon event. And nobody died from eating it! :)
