Someone mentioned washing bagged lettuce. I don't do that, I don't wash prewashed vegetables either. If I had to do that it would just set in the fridge until it rots. I don't want to get sick but, life is full of risks. I can't live under a rock.
And, yes when out camping if I'm cooking something and it drops on the ground I wash it off and put it back on the fire. I also eat the fish out of the local lakes and as a farm hand I know what sort of water run off is going into those lakes. It's not pretty.
And, yes I do sometimes let my dog lick the plate clean before it goes into the dishwasher. It's going to be clean and germ free after it comes out of the dishwasher so what difference does it make. I don't like it but, the dog has been known to lick me in the face too.
I've also been know to French kiss and do other things with people of the opposite gender too. You can catch germs that way too you know.
I would have no problem at a pot luck.
I agree with the people that said take a dish for you and the others and eat only your own dish if you like. If someone asks why say your on a low sodium diet and your dish is a low sodium dish.
To each his own.
