I eat at potlucks and enjoy trying new foods I have never had before.
That said, I want to share a true life experience.
A few years ago we hung out with 3 other couples and would visit each others homes to eat , drink, and enjoy the fire pit.
We'll call them Bill and Betty, Jack and Jill, Fred and Wilma. Whenever we would go to Jack and Jill's, Bill would never eat. Jack and Jill lived on a farm and raised their own beef, I assumed that was why... but because I grew up on a farm with "home killed" meat, it didn't bother me.
Then one day, he spoke to me alone and said the Wife and I shouldn't eat their food. "Ever notice Jill's pet?"
She had a pet Iguana and would prep the food with it sitting on her shoulder. Often times feeding it from her hand the same meat she was feeding us. That's when I learned Reptiles carry salmonella and we never ate their food again.
