My Norcold fridge has a diagnostic menu that you can get to by holding down "Temp Set" and "Mode" for a few seconds. One of the menu items shows the temperature of the sensor on the cooling unit..... Anything less than 22*, and I'm happy with how it feels in the freezer and fridge. My sensor fluctuates between 17* and 22*. If you open the door, you can see it go up a couple of degrees.
It's not an actual temperature reading inside the fridge or freezer, but I can easily tell if it's outside the norm at a glance.
