We do what Tachdriver does. We have a bulb type thermometer with red dye hanging on the shelf in the freezer. Reads somewhere between zero and ten degrees, unless the door is open for a long time. Real test is that ice cream stays hard.
In the fridge portion we have an indoor/outdoor digital mounted to the wall next to the fridge with the wired outdoor sensor tied to the middle shelf. Reads between thirty seven and forty two degrees, unless the door has recently been opened.
Only times we get higher temps is when we forget to turn the fridge back on after a stop for gas.
