We have always used an "old school" refrigerator thermometer inside of the fridge section. It hangs from the top shelf near the door which reads the higher temp you'd expect to find i the fridge. Normal readings for us are 34 degrees and it's pretty close to dead on steady with an exception for when we have a large number of guests over (mostly when those guests have kids :) ) Hard to cool things down when the door is open a lot.
As for the freezer section, it's pretty easy to tell how well it's doing by how hard the ice cream is. It's NEVER hard like a rock as at home but we're satisfied when it's just difficult to spoon out :)
