We put a battery disconnect switch inline before the battery post clamp on our 2014 Focus and just hooked up a new fused wire from the battery clamp still attached to the battery direct to the rear light circuit and the vacuum pump. We have now towed several thousand miles and no problems. We also put diodes in it to prevent backfeeding.
Be sure not to disconnect the battery until after you have set the transmission up for towing.
