Ford Focus Towing

I am leaning towards a Ford Focus Hatchback. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is easier to tow an automatic or manual transmission. The manual doesn't say there are any differences in the set up, but just checking that is true.

  • Easier to tow manual transmission focus. Less steps (battery disconnect).
  • OK...Other post leads me to believe it's a 6 speed select shift. Hope it's a 'SE' or a 'Titanium' with the 2.0L engine. Key or keyless ok. No ST or RS ,adaptive cruise or 1.0L ecoboost.

Auto trans battery MUST be disconnected. It is highly recommended that this be done at the battery terminal, not the firewall. A high grade battery switch (marine) should be used. Once set up, prep is no big deal. Unit tows very well.

  • Would be nice to know what year Focus you are looking at.

I pull a 2013 HB with the 'Select-shift-6 speed' trans. This is a twin shaft, double dry clutch system that works well. Yes the lurch you speak of CAN happen, though seldem does. On the dash you have a 'P R N D S'. S is for manual shifting by pushing rocker switch on side of shifter. Up side shifts up one gear each time you operate it. Down side shifts down one gear each time. I have used it in the mountains to downshift for speed control.

I must disconnect the battery when towing (installed cut off switch) and power my RVIbrake2 with a J&C 660 jump box. Lights are powered from the coach.
As with any toad, you need to follow the owners manual.

  • Hello, I have a 2012 Focus sedan, manual transmission. It is very simple to tow the car. Ignition is off and keys in my pocket, transmission in neutral and hand brake is released. That is all I do. The steering wheel does NOT lock in my car, that is the way it came from the factory. I hitch to my RV and tow it all wheels on the ground for as long as I want. When I get to where I am going I disconnect the hitch and drive off.

No special prep whatsoever other than installing a tow car brake system and a tow plate or base plate.

    All the best.
  • They tow good, just follow what owners manual says exactly. Now tow one ,just haven't changed my sig
