Ford Focus Transmission

I have been using my 2014 Focus as a dinghy since it was new and love the ease of hookup and 70 MPH towing. But it has been in at least 5 times for the well documented trans issues they have.
I remember there were several other people on here with the late model Focus. Are you guys having the trans issues too?
Mine seems the worst in hot weather.
It is a shame as it is otherwise a great dinghy and nice little drive around car.

  • The focus could be a great toad. But that tranny makes it a lemon. Ford should be ashamed.
  • It has been in at least 5 times for the shudder and slipping. 20K miles. 2 times so far clutch packs have been replaced and the other times it was reprogrammed with Ford's constant updates to fix their known issue.
When it works it is a nice car to drive. When it is shuddering and slipping, it is quite annoying. Mine is worst in heat and starting from a stop and turning a corner.
When talking to the dealer about it, they say to just keep bringing it in to get repaired while the warranty lasts. The courtesy driver says it is a big problem as he is driving people regularly.
  • I've got a 2014 with about 30k miles on it. It's been towed about 5k miles. Yes, my transmission sometimes shudders, but no problems aside from that.

Are you taking it in because of the well documented shudder, or are you having other problems. What are they doing to it each time it's in the shop?
  • We have a 2014 Focus and love it. Before the clutch packs and some sensors were changed and software updated, we were most unhappy. Ford paid for it all and has extended the warranty on this repair to 150k for all such Focus models, at least that is what the letter said we got from Ford. If yours has problems see a dealer fixes are available and ours is now great. They test it with a computer and actually drive it and the computer tells the tech how severe yours is.

Hint: ours got worse during mountain driving. Guess what I did for one hour prior to taking it to the dealer for the test. The tech said it was the worst he had ever seen.
  • Hi, I have 2012 Focus with. 5 speed manual transmission and it great. But you may be talking about an auto transmission.
  • I believe there is a class action concerning that.

I am having my 2012 Edge rebuilt at 63000 miles right now. It is not in the action but it is frustrating to have to spend 4K with a transmission that is three thousand miles out of warranty.
