Fishinghat, thank you for your help. The Mustang I am buying is also a convertible. I am looking forward to touring with the top down, in warmer weather, of course.

Last time I towed a mustang if rember right the manual said up to 50 miles before you have to take the drive line off . It has to do with the transmission getting lubed the gears that turn when driven by the engine are bigger and run in the oil and sling everywhere! Which is true of every manual trans I've had apart.
Starting the engine with the car in neutral with the clutch out would accomplish this.
V8or 6 wouldn't matter.

x2 - REMCO site listed the V6 as Towable and no mention of the V8. They also said keep speed below 70MPH and run the engine every few hours. To charge the battery, according to the REMCO page, but I think To Lube the Trans makes more sense.

We towed a 2000 Mustang Convertible for about 8 years with no difficulties. It had a 6 cylinder engine and manual transmission. The base plate was installed by Tork Lift and I used a Roadmaster tow bar. Friends towed a V8 version with a manual transmission, but I understand that is not recommended, apparently due to the different front suspension system.

You do want to start the engine every day or 500 miles or so. That lubricates the transmission.

The REMCO site (they sell lube pumps to make some automatics towable, and at least used to sell driveshaft disconnects) shows 1998 Mustang 6-cyl manual trans "towable as is." Based on that it looks like you can tow in N. I'd add, just make sure the transmission is full to the level plug. I add that to try to help the gears pick up some lubricant and splash it around inside the trans while being towed.
Motorhome Magazine publishes annual lists of those vehicles APPROVED BY BUILDER to be towable. They do NOT list vehicles that people have "gotten away with" towing. I don't know how far their listings go and I'm not a subscriber.
Baseplates are expensive, around say $400. As you price them, check makariosrv.com since when I last looked they were among the lowest and free shipping.

Woo-Hoo! I phoned Roadmaster, and their base plate #466-1 fits all '98 Mustangs except the Cobra models. Thanks, paulcardoza, for your help.

Thanks to all who have shared their views with me. Blue Ox is a bust, but the knowledge that Roadmaster has a base plate is encouraging. I wasn't able to access very much from the Roadmaster site. I'll go back and give it another try. Roadmaster is on the West coast, so I can phone them and perhaps speak to an actual person. In my youth, my father and I had to tow our own vehicles home for repairs when they broke down, so I know the old manual transmissions were towable. Electronic traction controls and etc. on modern vehicles may present other problems, but I need to eliminate this vehicle before I can move on to something else.

Well..... Roadmaster's web site lists a baseplate for the '98 Mustang, but gives no other detials. Blue Ox does not show a baseplate for any Mustang that I can find.

Might be time to re-think your dinghy choice....

On a manual transmission? Every Manual transmission I know of you just put it in neutral and it’s a go. I've towed many a manual transmission vehicle without any problems. I'm now towing a KIA Soul with a manual transmission.

Lastly, Blueox, Towmaster, etc will give it in their specs as to the transmission restrictions.
