In those 13 years I have had many lengthy absences, one as long as 9 months.
Fact is, it takes just a few posts to catch up on anything "new" and then it's on to the same people spouting the same things over and over and over.
Frankly, it gets completely boring and I have better things to do. Perhaps some of those other "missing" feel the same way and absent themselves for the same reasons.
