Free To Air - Satellite Dish Programming - any owners

Hello,

I was wondering if any of you folks are using the Free to Air non subscription satellite dishes remotely when you travel.

I am thinking of getting one to suppliment the broadcast signals we get when on the road and I'm not really interested in a Dish Network or Direct TV subscription on top of my local cable bill.

Free to Air programs are in the hundreds but I'm only interested in the English ones and not all religious programming only which appears to be abundant when looking at the FTA listings here and there.

So I was wondering if anybody out there actually has tried this and what to expect if I do the same.

Bill

Keep us informed. I'm interested also, I never heard of this before.

Well I could use some help if some of the interested parties here wouldn't mind adding to research.

Here is a review on the box I am looking at. Seems that you can get the receiver, dish and lnb for the 200 or so range.. probably another few bucks to get a dish with a motor.

What I believe I've found is that a firmware update on this Jinx box and/or many of the other receivers will tune more free channels legally. Not sure yet how all this works. It's not a matter if I'm getting one, it's when ... When I figure it out to know what to buy.

So if I spark some interest, please post what you find out as well and we'll share info. Sure would be nice to have free sat-tv when on the road!

I'm looking for a better review more about the FTA side, apparently this box does "everything".

im looking for the same thing

Well I've done a lot of research. I'm looking at getting a JYNX box FTA receiver and dish. I'm confused at the moment because they don't get all the programming unless you have special firmware installed. Then I'm not sure if they are still legal or not. I think I've learned that a firmware upgrade gets some free extra channels but I'm not quite ready to try this until I find out. The last thing I'm interested at this age in my life is bootlegging HBO, so once I find out about the firmware update and additional channels, then I'll update you.

I think I understood that the firmware update simply causes the receiver to tune into more legal frequencies and picking up back feeds, etc... Legal stuff. Just not sure yet.

Let me know if you discover anything.

  • Great, we can look together. I use to have a big C-Band dish, remember those 12ft monsters. Well one aspect of those was wild feeds. Programming that isn't listed but are distribution paths to the stations. If FTA has these wild feeds then no matter what regular programming is shown the wild feeds are often prime time and syndicated shows so there's a lot to watch if there are numerous feeds.

How about we stay in touch musicman54. I'm on the edge of just ordering one. Now for some "dark" side of it... in researching this I found that these same FTA dishes are being used to pirate programming also. But I'm not interested in this although I might be interested in some economical paid channels. I just don't have enough information yet. I do know that when I had a C-BAND dish, you could buy programming super cheap. I'm wondering if the same future may be down the road for FTA dishes.

Anyhow, let's keep in touch. I might just buy one soon and I'll know what's up.
