I've been in San Diego for 35 years and can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've been up to the Los Angeles area. The Last time was in the mid 1990s when the big October RV show was held at Dodgers Stadium. (Since then in Pomona, of course.)
We always sneak into Pomona from the east. I sort of consider that whole "mess" up there as being Los Angeles even though the city itself is just a tiny part of that area. So maybe I'm cheating a bit by saying I've only been "up there" a few times. Pomona is part of the LA area. But we sneak in right along the foothills and get back out the same way. We have always done a big loop around to the east to avoid the LA area.
And I agree that California is a wonderful state to check out. Some travel guides break the state down into 12 separate areas and it's almost like visiting 12 different states. The variety is awesome here in California. Don't let California issues prevent anybody from taking a great tour throughout this state.
Remember, our idiots tend to be concentrated in the big cities. Just visit the rest of the state.
