I was born in Pasadena and my parents house looked over the Rose Bowl but I left for college in the 1970's and never returned. Each year a new freeway was being opened and scrub desert and orchard land was being turned into start home subdivisions. Too many people and way too many cars.
As a child I rode the electric trolly cars in Pasadena but then the company that Standard Oil, General Motors, and Firestone Tire funded bought the rail line and ripped out the rails and gave up the right of ways and brought in buses built by GM, fueled by Chevron, and rolling on Firestone Tires. Now instead of mass transit as is common in Europe we have a private auto only transportation system that is the worst in the world.
Even China is better than the USA in terms of transportation options and efficient high speed trains. My mother who lives in Laguna made the mistake of taking the train from LA to Salinas and this 300 mile trip took 12 hours. In China a 300 mile train trip takes 2 hours. But we do have the best weapons of mass production and the most battleships and the most overseas military bases of any other nation - hoorah!
