Fridge not working when driving.

Ok, this is NOT the beginner's forum. :)

When parked and not on 110V electricity, and with the gas on (and the stove and gas water heater working fine) the fridge would work too.

But as we drove (relatively long drives), we'd arrive with the check fridge light illuminated and stuff a bit warm inside.

Turning the fridge off and then on, seemed to reset it.

Now for the clincher- last year, I had to get a new chimney cover installed- and I'm suspecting the airflow back there has changed to where it blows out the fridge burner...

Ok, here's the bottom line and my question: Is that a likely culprit or is there something else I should be checking???

  • Are these covers directional? Did you perhaps get it installed front to back? Just guessing here.

    ...what illuminates the "check" light?

I guess we are fortunate that our off-road POPUP fridge runs on 12VDC -120VAC-gas

We always start out with a cold fridge with minimal cold supplies in it. We will fire up the fridge on 12VDC when we are around 2 hours out from the planned camp site on a quick one day drive trip. If driving for a couple of days we will run the fridge on 12VDC more during the trip. Usually don't have problems with it getting warm in it. We also don't stock it up heavy with cold items until we arrive at the camp site. Usually pull into a WALMART and get our cold things for a couple of days supply just before pulling into the camp site.

Since we have been running the fridge and having a few cold things in already it doesn't have to take along time to get up to speed on keeping added things cold.

We also have room either on the trailer deck or in the back of the truck for our 5-day freezer chest. It is always filled up with ICE on the trip and have a plastic container sitting on top of the ice to keep things nice and cold and not water logged. The 5-day freezer chest of course is our PLAN B item...

  • Wind could be blowing out the flame. I had to enlarge my wind shield. No more problems.
  • I also had the same problem, and couldn't figure it out also but a strange thing happened.

I replaced my vent cover with one of these Vent Cover. Not for that problem but to get Hot air out of the chimney because I boondocked in the Desert a lot and this made the fridg cool better and faster.

And the problem went away I never thought much about it till now.

After watching the video on the link it seems probable.

I wonder if the air flow has something to do with it.

Might be something to look into.
  • Hi,

How long since you last blew out the burner and gave it a good cleaning?
