fuel quality question

There's a lot of things that impact mileage and I'm not sure you can easily compare MPG, especially in winter -

- D1 is blended with D2 in winter in varying percentages based on the temps being experienced in that particular area. The blend will be different in Minn then in Tennessee, for example. And no blending in Florida, except for MAYBE the panhandle. D1 has less BTUs, therefore yields less mpg.

- If you drive south to Florida you will be dropping in elevation. You may say that you don't notice it but my experience has been that I get better mpg going south to Florida as opposed to driving back north.

- The wind. Pulling a 5er into a headwind makes for less mpg. I know this is obvious, but it seems lake any amount of headwind affects my mpg.

As far as I know fuel is piped to large distribution Hub in an area and then transported to all station in that area get their fuel from that source.

There is different refineries across the country. Fuel quality varies. I typically fuel in IN, and ND. I get better economy with the IN fuel. But other factors come into play. Examples: WIND, grade, Road surface.

OK, so to extend this topic -- who has the best diesel fuel. By best, I mean reliably more 'pure' D2, and also maybe, reliably less chance of water? By who, I mean Chevron, Exxon, or some of the truck stops, names of which escape me.

Yep, "ethanol hater" here, and biodiesel hater too.
I run pure gasoline in my gas powered truck ( and all my power equipment too ) and pure diesel in my diesel truck, bobcat and tractor.
Better fuel mileage in all of these engines is just part of why I do so.

It's the same here in Texas with the winter unleaded. I live in the DFW area and they have a different blend as opposed to alot of the other parts of the state where smog is less of a concern, and I get 3-4 MPG less during the winter with my F-150

I've been running diesels for more years than I want to think about and know he difference in blends. I'm talking a drop here below what my normal winter blend mileage is, in the neighborhood of another 1.5 mpg. And the only other difference was the three pumps had a sticker on the face showing 10% ethanol added. The last pump used in SC did not have the sticker and the last fuel in Ga did not have that sticker either. In both of the last 2 fillups, my mileage went back to normal. Next?

added - after some reading, I'm wondering if this would be te equivalent of biodiesel ?

Its funny you mention that. When towing my 5er I get about 3mpg better when in central Georgia on south to FL. Pretty much like that for any time of year for me.
