It's a stretch, but I can see a chance of the prep people bringing the wrong unit up for pickup by the new buyer. Particularly if they have similar new units in stock and no one checked the numbers. The unit in for service might have been a new one in for warranty repairs that hadn't been stocked up with personal items yet.
