A few years ago, a coworker went to a dealership to look at new cars during lunch break. When I came back after lunch, I parked next to him and noticed he had no rear license plate. I walked to the front of his car and he also had no front plate. Went into work and told him. At first he thought I was joking but eventually went out and saw the missing plates.
He went back to the dealer and eventually got the story. It turns out that someone had bought a new car and traded his old one in. The trade was parked out front next to the coworkers car. Both were the same model (Mercury Cougar). The dealer salesman had told the "gopher" to get the plates off the Cougar parked in front. You guessed it-they took the plates off coworker's car.
My cousin works for an insurance company and relates the following story. A person had bought a new car at a dealership and drove away. He got in an accident the next day and made a claim to the insurance company. The dealer had given the wrong VIN number to the insurance company, so the insurance refused to pay, saying that wasn't the covered car. The driver eventually got it straightened out and got paid, but it was a hassle. Always check VIN numbers on the paperwork when you buy a new vehicle.
