NICE description and pic with it! THANK YOU!!!
While you were graciously typing that, I called my father-in-law who is a retired electrician and computer guy. He also explained what you did so now it makes more sense. I actually recall opening up thermostats from long ago now. I believe this may do the trick. Easy fix! I will try it in the morning and report back.
My father-in-law suggested 110 grit sand paper. Would it be better to go to the DIY center and get one of those contact files?
Anything that would clean them up a bit but,
Honestly....I would just pick up a new one. They aren't that much money. Your planning a trip I think you said, why mess with it. The t-stat might not even be the problem, just a good guess at present. Just get a new one and t-stat wire connections problems or contact problem or even broken spring problem will be fixed with one new t-stat. (important)...Save your directions...There's a thing in there that tells how many degrees to fall before it come back on. Can't remember the name right now. But in directions. You'll need them if not set right. I found mine to be alright in the pre-set position when installing. About a 10 min job.
Usually "just get a new one" is not me at all and I would trouble shoot something to death before I would buy a new part. But you have probably planned this trip for awhile. Don't cut yourself short trouble shooting a $20.00 part. T-stat is the problem I think. But I've sure been wrong before.
(By pass t-stat to trouble shoot) What I would do is remove t-stat, have propane on and battery charged up or on elec, touch wires together, heater should start or you should here a click. Let heater run for couple min. then separate wires and heater should shut off after it cycles thru.
If heater does all the above, I would say T-stat is on the blink.
Maybe someone with more info will post more.
I only know what we went thru on ours. We would wake up freezing middle of the night. I would move temp slider over and heater would kick in. This happened over and over. Finally pulled t-stat off wall and found one of the wires to be making contact sometimes.
