^^Aaaand we got the first dually recommendation on page 6! Dude where were you 5 pages ago....
So far we've run the gamut here, so I'll sum it up.
1. Big new SUV - Comfortable and powerful enough, runs out of payload, but honestly will tow the trailer the OP wants wherever he wants to tow it, just fine.
2. 8 lug Van. Even more room inside for the booger eaters and plenty of axle to carry it, at the expense of having the same power as a new big HP SUV. Have to search to find one that is engine and geared for towing moreso than pickups and SUVs. Pros, cheaper to buy. Cons, have to find the right one.
3. HD pickup. Best all around machine for the job save for having one of the munchkins have to ride b!tch for 15,000 miles. Then you don't want the little one who should be in a booster seat getting whacked by 2 airbags if you crash, so you put a big kid up front, and that doesn't sound like fun.
4. Old 3/4 ton SUV. Depending on what you find and if you're handy, this could be the best overall solution. Actually it very likely is, save for repairs. Low cost of admission (comparatively) provided you get a solid one. But the chance of you fixing everything so that you don't have to d!ck with it on the road is slim, but you got a year, so a couple shop visits aint the end of the world.
5. And our final suggestion. "You'll run out of payload in a 1 ton srw truck"......will just leave that one alone.
If you like spending money on vehicles and value horsepower and comfort while traveling, I'd still get a new Expedition XL or 6.2L
Burb.
If your frugal and want the best combo for this application and have time to find the right one, 8 lug Van FTW.
If you dont want a van, ok with an old vehicle and want 3rd row seating and are afraid you'll break a 1/2 ton, Ford Excursion or 2500 Suburban.
