Gas $$$.
Hate to say "I told you so" to the manufacturers eliminating most vehicles that get the best MPG ( lite weight compact, sub-compact sedans, wagons and hatchbacks). If gas continues to go up, consumers...

Here in our part of Canada, gas is almost $5 US/gal. It WILL go up over the summer because it always does. Some say it's an economist's supply/demand thing and while I know there's more to it than that, the gas companies use whatever tools and excuses they can to charge us premium prices. Pretty hard for many people who commute to work every day and those who drive for a living to cut down on gas consumption.
The BC government has stated that they want all vehicles sold here by 2040 to be electric. I have to wonder what an electric pickup truck will be like and if it has anywhere near the payload and towing capacities in today's trucks. A large percentage of vehicles around here are pickups - to heck with CAFE standards or saving the planet.
I also have to wonder what electric capacity there will be from power companies to handle so many electric vehicles and what the carbon increase will be. Also, what will be the costs and implications to provide the infrastructure for charging stations everywhere. I even heard the other day that they are proposing that in the near future that all newly constructed buildings won't be able to use any natural gas for heating and hot water and will have to be 100% electric. I think a lot of this is driven by politics and has not been properly addressed from a technical perspective.
