Gas Choice

Poor gas quality seems to cause generator carb problems. How many of you choose to pay a little more for non-ethenal gas?

Thanks
  • In the car and Jeep which are daily driven I get the cheapest gas from anywhere I can find. In the classic antique vehicles, boat, lawnmower, chainsaw, etc. I ONLY use non-ethanol.
  • In my opinion having any amount of ethanol in gasoline makes it "bad".
It's lower in energy and hell on parts. It also doesn't store well and goes bad far faster than pure gas.
  • well my mechanic friend has a large box of motorparts that have been ruined by ethanol. mechanics have signs on the wall, not responsible for ethanol caused issues. I think a lot has to do with the alcohol sucking up moisture.

  • Whether it's our onboard Onan or the Champion 3100 inverter genny we picked up before our first trip out this past Spring, both get whatever gas I use for the rest of our vehicles which is the cheapest I can find using GasBuddy app. On top of that it is normally 85/86 octane where we live and RV due to elevation. Our Champion inverter genny already has run 100 hours unperturbed by cheap gas.

I often hear/read about all the fuel delivery issues generators have with cheap gas, this has not been our experience, our 10 year old Onan has run 1K hours with zero carburetion issues. Don't have any special tricks, just change oil, clean air filter and spark plug annually. Still has original fuel filter. Of course I carry spare fuel filters and spark plugs should I ever need them.

I use Stabil and an occasional bottle of Seafoam on all of our seldom used gasoline motors, have never emptied gas tanks or run carburetors dry when storing for prolonged periods. We have a toyhauler TT and several Honda quads, one is 13 years old and the other two are 10 years old. They start right up every Spring, never serviced by dealer, just same maintenance as genny.
  • For my Motor-home where the main tank feeds the generator it would be cost prohibitive, so I run the generator often to keep it fresher, but I have enough problems with my carbureted '71 bronco, that if I have Non-ethanol gas available I would use it if I could.
  • I have a stand alone gen with it's own fuel supply (gas)

I have/do fill it with whatever is available (12 gal) and then properly dose it with Seafoam or Stabil
Then at least once a month run it for 30 minutes under at least 50% load

I have 2 gas cans in garage....one 2.5 gal and one 5 gal
Again ...whatever fuel is available and again good dose of Seafoam or Stabil
Gas is used in walk behind lawnmower/riding mowing and in chain saws

Only issue starting/running was due to a non operating choke on walk behind mower (twig was stuck in choke slide)
  • Are you talking about a motorhome with gen or standalone gen? The answer may be different.
  • I do, I do!
I only go through about 7 gallons in a year so I fill up with the good stuff and then juice it up with some SeaFoam.
My Honda ran like krap until I ran it with this elixir for an extended amount of time. It has run smooth since.
