$2.39 for 87-octane in Birmingham, AL today. oil is a commodity. econ 101...supply and demand is a force in gas and other refined products. taxes have a huge part in pricing, too. sales tax, state, federal and maybe local gas taxes can drive up pump prices. our governor in illinois is proposing to double the per gallon state gas tax from $.19 to $.38.
