How long did it run before turning the grass brown? Frankly, I'd be a little concerned. Is anyone else's genny doing that? I've run mine in grassy fields a few times, for hours at a time, without the grass being affected at all. Though I haven't done it with a heavy load for a long period of time.
And yes the heat does build up under there unless there's a breeze to blow it away. Inevitably that breeze blows the hot air where we're sitting and it's HOT. I can feel the heat from it on the floor inside. Your deflector idea is a good one. Or maybe a portable, electric fan under there?
