Generator question

I am about 12 hours away from ordering the Honda EU 2000 combo. The Missus is aghast at the price of these things. Does anyone know of a better deal than Wise Sales? As long as I am spending money are there any accessories that are an absolute must?
Funny, I sold a couple of MY toys to pay for these things, and now she is all concerned about the money WE are spending.

  • Be sure to make sure one the 'Companion". It has the 30A plug, and makes for a better combination.

And I do agree with her, if you rarely boondock, or rarely have plug in electrical service. But if you do boondock, then your batteries will not last all that long. Forget any high draw A/C appliances. You only have 12V. Pretty much limited to Lights, Water Pump, Slide outs, and such. No Television, Microwave, A/C, etc.

Maybe take her boondocking on a hot summers weekend. There will not be any 110V appliances. If she is OK with that, then no gen needed.
  • Take her for a ride to the nearest constructions site and give her the opportunity to listen to an open frame generator( this suggestion was given to me by a Harbor Freight employee). Until you have heard one of those China junkers scream you can't imagine how noisy they are. That field trip should end any further concerns about getting a decent quality generator. Yep, you get what you pay for. :B
  • Tell her thats just the way it is and she'll have to live with it.
I like to say this while smiling a lot, rubbing her feet and suggesting that it's just been too long since she spent a day at the spa.

Tell her (in the nicest way possible) that you get what you pay for, it only hurts once, and you'll never have to buy another generator. The only service I've ever needed in 10 years is a new starter rope.

I bought mine off of eBay and got them in the $800 range (if i remember right, they were both new). This was in 2005. It took a while to win at the price cap I sat for myself, but I wasn't in any hurry (took 3 months for the trailer to arrive with the special order specs). Might want to check craigslist as well, though you will probably only find used ones. Would want to check them over good for used, maybe even have a Honda service tech take a look at them.
