Does anyone know which big-box store is best to buy a champion generator? I am at Duke cancer center for a doctor's appointment this morning and headed back to the coast to get my house finished ready...

As others have said, you really need a 3000w class generator to reliably run an rv air conditioner.
champion makes a nice 3100 and 3400w inverter units that will do the job nicely. Available with or without electric start, and some models are "dual fuel" and will run on gas or propane.
Run about $800 and up on Amazon, sometimes Supergen products has refurbished units available for substantially less.
Or you can get 2 of the 2000w inverters and parallel together.
