The year is important! Many years can be towed 4 down so putting the front wheels on a dolly wouldn't be an issue. If you have automatic hubs I would use the dolly because although it's possible, disconnecting them can be problematic.
On my 1991 (4 down towing), the front hubs would be unlocked, the ignition key turned to "off" but not removed (this would leave the steering wheel free to turn on mine), the automatic transmission put in "park" and the transfer case put in "neutral". Every 200 miles or less I would start the engine, put the transmission in drive and let it idle for at least 1 minute (this was to lube the transfer case). This is all per the manufacturer's instructions. I towed the car 1000's of miles this way.
