Wiring Geo tracker toad

I have a 1996 2 door geo tracker that I plan to use as a toad behind my class a. There is no wiring connector on the mh, so I bought a hopkins 48205 connecting set from the local wally-world.

Can anyone give me some insight on a wiring job such as this? I can figure out what to do with the mh wiring, but I'm unsure on the tracker.

I appreciate it

With this method first be sure that the cars electronics will not be damaged.

The bullet proof way is to install diodes in the car to isolate the 2 electrical systems or to install separate bulbs in the car. It's common to run 4 wires for the toad wiring. You'll have ground, running lights, left turn/brake and right turn/brake.

If the MH has separate turn and brake lights then buy the simple adapter to combine them for the toad wiring.
  • DS you might find this diagram to be helpful figuring out what color wires normally connect to which light bulbs.

Now that is a fantastic idea! THANKS!

I too am in the process of setting up a 96 tracker as a toad. It came with the roadmaster arms attached but the towbar (or any wiring) was not included.

  • Well, heres what I have:

The motorhome has a 4 wire flat connector. It has a white wire, brown wire, yellow wire, and a green wire.

The future connector to the tracker has (oddly enough) a white wire, brown wire, yellow wire, and a green wire.

I'm not going to tap into the geo factory wiring. I'm making a "T" that rides in the geo's hitch and has 2 lights mounted on the ends of the "T".

Those lights have 2 bulbs in each and have a brown wire, a yellow wire, and a white wire. Presumably these are for stop lights and tuen signal lights.

I'm just curious about which of the wires from the lights go to which of the wires to the geo future connector. I think I know what goes where but would really appreciate any insight

  • I found an old trailer lighting kit on a shelf in the shop and I think I'll just make a light bar and run everything off the motorhome. It sounds like a Dave-proof idea
  • If your MH has the standard 2 tail lights with stop and turn together, The Tracker has seprate stop and turn you need a 2to3 converter. Check on line "Curt" makes a good one Summit racing and others sell them. I had two trackers and now a Suzuki grand vitara and have used one on each.
  • I had a Sidekick, same thing. I think there is a mismatch between the Tracker and the MH. Tracker separates the turn and stop functions. If memory serves me right, tracker owners used to put a separate bulb in the tailing housing and wire to it. I just used the magnetic add on lights as being simple. I ran the wire through the grill, out the back corner of the hood (passenger side), in through the passenger door, and out the top back corner to the passenger door. This only took a few minutes to hook up. Not as pretty as a built-in system but didn't require modifying the toad.
  • Unless you are good at wiring I would have pro do it. Otherwise see if you find find a wiring diagram on the net for your coach.
