You have such a great attitude DesertCaptain, it was a pleasure to read this thread. Don't feel bad about not seeking a second opinion when a problem didn't get better. I did the same thing, and I'm a nurse.
My GP impatiently showed me the x-rays of a leg he diagnosed as sprained at the ankle and broken at the knee when I returned and said the ankle was not healing. Some time later, working as a camp nurse, colleagues insisted I see an orthopedic surgeon, who correctly diagnosed both breaks and stabilized my leg with surgery.
My GP has otherwise has been quick to listen and respectful, a skilled clinician will be that way.
Still, if things just don't seem right, get a second opinion. It may be the best money you spend, if it's out of pocket.
Thanks again to all for your kind supportive comments. I'm sitting here typing with 80 allergy patches on my back in the middle of a week of testing for a Chromium reaction that could be contributing to and/or causing the knee problems. Getting the second opinion was the best thing I could have done. I have total confidence in my new surgeon and on Monday he will schedule the next surgery. I'll get through this but still have a long way to go and the encouragement I find here helps tremendously. :B
