Getting Maxxis tires installed

After researching the forums, it seems like the majority of people seem to like Maxxis tires (for ST tires). Did some research and there are no local tire or trailer places around that are Maxxis dealers in my area. I called a local trailer place and even though that don't carry Maxxis tires, they said they could get them. Brought the TT in this past weekend to get them installed.

Replacing 4 year old Tow Max tires. I have not had any issues with them but it seems like many people have issues with this brand. Figured 4 years were old enough. Peace of mind having new tires anyway...

I wonder what it cost to have them mounted and balanced?

    $116 a tire.
  • I am changing out the tires on my new 2015 Open Range.I Was going to go to Maxxis 235/85/R16 but then looked at the Carlisle RH tires. I cannot find any negative feedback on their newer design tires since 2012 . 3 years is not a long period for problems to show up but I would think there would be "some" negative comments by now if there was a problem.
One feature of note is The Maxxis are a 9/32nd tread depth. The Carlisles are 13/32nds tread depth. Almost 50% deeper tread. The Carlisles have a couple of hundred more Reserve capacity per tire than the Maxxis as well.
Any comments by Carlisle users ?
The Carlisle's are readily available but most shops have to order the Maxxis. I had Maxxis on my last trailer.

I'm having Maxxis tires put on our Minnie. They're ordere and should be installed sometime this week. A little voice in my head said to replace the cheap Chineese tires that came with the trailer....they're only a year old, but I've got a couple of long trips planned and didn't want to take a chance when I'm looking at traveleing over 4,000 miles before July! I had a set of Maxxis on our Sunline and they were great tires!

I only have about 7000 miles on our TowMax tires but the date code on the tires is October of 2010. I purchased the TT new in July of 2011. I have a long trip coming up in May and didn't want to take any chances. Plus, needed to get bearings done anyway.

  • You made a good choice IMO. I have had nothing but good service from Maxxis ST tires. Do get the tires balanced BTW.

Good call. Did you have them balanced. I recommend you do.

I'm not sure if they balance them or not. The establishment is a trailer parts and trailer maintenance shop. They sell enclosed trailers and work on trailers/axles. I am also having them grease/pack the axle bearings and adjust the brakes. I have had the TT for almost 4 years and this is the first time the bearings have been greased. The Maxxis cost me $20 a tire more than what they normally install (Goodyear Marathons) but I figured I'd pay the extra $80 since the Maxxis seem to get good reviews for ST tires. My rims are 14" so I didn't have near as many options available. There are a lot more options if I had 15" rims.
