I don’t mind paying the going rate for work that is NEEDED, done properly, and on the first trip. Those vendors I will use over and over, even if they are a little more costly.
The real problem is when the work is NOT needed. Last winter, I sent my wife to a Dodge dealer for an oil change. They told her that the ruck needed calipers, rotor and pads on the front without even removing a wheel! $800.00 worth of “work” recommended. They did not know that she and I are former NAPA store owners and more familiar with parts than the average person.
When we got the truck back, my brother in law, who is a heavy duty truck mechanic, pulled the front wheels for us. (He had put pads on it about 8000 miles ago.) Nothing wrong!
My wife commented: ”What would we have done if we did not “know” trucks/” Most likely we would have paid the $800.00.
