I completely understand your issues with incompetent installation of the Reese DC. My brand new trailer's A frame was ruined by someone with no skill or knowledge whatsoever despite being a "certified dealer" for Reese. That being said, the damage done could have happened in the hands of any clueless mech with no idea that too much torque can ruin parts regardless of the system he was installing.
The DC is not hard to adjust if you spend the time, and I do love the control it gives that a friction based system simply can't match. All my issues with the DC come from the botched install, which bent my frame, and which I regularly have to correct, but I wouldn't have picked any other system and would be a happy owner if I had it installed by someone who bothered to read and adhere to the instructions.
