I was 16 in 1954 when Hazel hit the area near Myrtle Beach and Calabash, NC. No TV. Just radio. That did last long because we lost power. The area we were in experienced the "EYE". Winds blew in one direction, then a dead calm. We thought it was all over, then the wind started blowing in the opposite direction.
Since Hazel, I have been on the receiving end of several. For a while it seemed like ever Oct. vacation we had one.
Experienced one Tornado in Knoxville, TN. Doppler radar was tracking it traveling west on a street just two blocks south of where we lived. I believe that the news cast was about as nerve racking that I had experienced. Having seen what one could. It did pass us by, but destroyed a lot of houses east of us.
I think I prefer Hurricanes over Tornado's. More time to prepare.
