I can't imagine anyone thinking that's a good way to commit suicide (worse than doing it by going over Niagara Falls in my mind). The story says folks saw him "walk off the boardwalk" - I wonder if he thought it'd be safe to do that...

They warn against leaving the boardwalks. The 'terra firma' may not be firm at all, but a thin crust. Oh well, some people just have a knack for getting themselves into hot water.

I've read the book Death In Yellowstone. If and when I ever go I will NEVER leave the boardwalks. Over some of those thermals the crust is very thin.From what I read in the book due to the altitude of Yellowstone the boiling point for the water is around 198 or something like that. So 200 is pretty darn hot.

:SThis year seems to be the worst for incidents!

We went 2 years ago and my wife made a good comment. She said: "I don't know how anyone can feel safe walking on top of one of the world's biggest supervolcanoes. One day this thing is going to blow and people will question the sanity of making a national park and encouraging millions of visitors to go wandering around on top of a supervolcano."

Nevertheless, we loved our trip and enjoyed seeing all the sites!

If it blows no one will be safe! But imagine the front seat view you'll have when your there!

As the years go by and I grow older, I understand why people do the things they do.

You cannot fix Stupid, it's Impossible. I get frustrated as to why? Common sense is something we are born with, isn't it? Sad tho that a young man had to die so early in life.

I wonder if his name was Stu? ;)

Yep, that was mentioned in the article. But I left out the "less than pleasant" details.

Looking forward to going for the first time next year! I can follow directions, signs, orders. so I feel I will be safe! Of course I have common sense which goes a long way!

I read the "Death in Yellowstone" book as well. The first story was about someone who decided to go try rescuing their dog by jumping off the boardwalks into one of the cauldrons. Needless to say, I am not into autodarwination, so I'm staying well within where the signs say.

As for bison/buffalo, if I want to deal with calves, there are a few ranches nearby that I can always ask to come on site... and because the animals have almost zero natural predators, they react to people a lot differently than true wild animals.

I just read an update this morning that says they called off the search because "there isn't anything to find"!
