Good Sam Trip Planner

Why is it when I route my trip online using the trip planner then import the route into my Good Sam GPS, has me going a different way. Good Sam Support instructed me to contact Rand McNally. They told me if GPS is unsure of the route I choose, the GPS will reroute me another way. This all makes sense but I am using major roads, interstates, and turnpikes. How sure of a road does the GPS need. Has anyone experienced this.

  • Almost every GPS based navigation device does its own routing on the fly. The device has its own map information, which includes routing priorities, and uses at most only the stops identified on the route imported.

I found this to be the case even when using identical map data on the computer, i.e. map data in the GPS device came from the computer, and the routing program came from the GPS manufacture.

In the case of Good Sams online planner and Rand McNally's device, it is unlikely that they have map data in common to the extent they might share routing details. The work around is to put in enough stops or waypoints to force the GPS to come up with your preferred route.

Ask Good Sam how they are so effective & efficient at 'routing' junk mail to you.

Maybe they can incorporate the system into your GS GPS...:W

  • I have learned after years of using a GPS to also carry a map with me. Out in the desert, I've been told to turn on roads that are nothing more than dirt tracks. I've read of folks getting so lost they end up dying and occasionally the thing will get lost and out of the blue tell me to make "the next legal U-turn" I often use the option of "less freeways" so you might want to check to see what your default setting is. If its less freeways, it might route you differently.
