Goose box vs Andersen

Hello all,

As you may know I recently purchased a new 2019 Chevy 2500 but it did not have the puck package so my options are many at this point. One that I am interested in is a ball mount hitch assuming I install a B&W turnover. I know many here love the Andersen but to be honest I'm not so sure I want to shift the weight 4" or so inches further back and remove weight from the front axle and add it to the back. From what I gather that can essentially add 400# to the rear vs being ahead of the rear axle. With my conventional B&W hitch I have now that I used in my last truck I never had clearance issues. So that brings up the Reese Goosebox. What is also appealing is that my truck bed is completely empty when unhitched, and as light as the Anderson is there won't be any need to unbolt it from the bed and store. The other plus is it has an airbag and shocks to cushion the ride. I could also use the 4" offset ball to if needed for clearance.

So I guess my question to those with the Andersen is why did you choose this route over the Goosebox? For those who have the Goosebox would you do it again? The only negative I can think of with the Goosebox is seeing it while hitching, but I would think this could be over come with a mirror or a cheap bluetooth GoPro style camera.

  • We used an Andersen Ultimate (steel, rail mount) in our GMC Sierra short bed. It was a good hitch and only moved about 100 lbs. off the front wheels. The aluminum versions are ball mount. PullRite now has their version called the SuperLite which is also a good hitch. From an engineering point of view, I'm not a fan of the GooseBox because of the torsional forces that type of adapter puts on the front of a fifth wheel RV. Fifth wheel frames are not designed and made like gooseneck untility and stock trailers.

  • Fifth wheel hitches are not built for the additional stress on the hitch framework added by use of a Goosebox. It is inadvisable and I wonder if some fifth wheel manufacturers might void a warranty if they were aware it was towed with a Goosebox.

Compare the structure of the goose neck of a farm truck with the hitch structure of a fifth wheel. The Gooseneck trailer was designed for that type of hitch. Fifth wheels are not. I was once shopping for a specific model of used fifth wheel, found one, and saw it had a Goosebox, so I passed on it. If the hitch structure were damaged by use of the Goosebox, in most cases the damage might not be visible, thus you would have to dismantle the fifth wheel hitch to find out.

    Use at your own risk.

I wouldn't consider it if it voided the frame warranty. Lippert does approve the use of them. Goosebox is not a goose extension.

  • Howdy!

I’ve been using the Goose Box on my RV for a few months now. Personally I would not go back to a 5er hitch unless I exceed the weight limit. I also use a 4” offset ball. My truck has a custom hauler bed with a trough and the 4” offset ball is needed to fit inside the trough. I have a camera in the headache rack of my truck which helps and that along with my wife we’ve gotten pretty good at hitching up.
