Thanks all - can I remove the probes/sensors and clean them off manually? I see there is some red sealant on the outside which I don't have so I am worried about taking them off?
People keep using the word "sensor" that part is basically a bolt thru the side of the tank. Cleaning that bolt head will accomplish nothing. The resistance between the bolt heads (sensors) is read by the gage and turns on the light that corresponds to that resistance. The problem is the residue on the tank walls between the bolt heads and that residue reduces the resistance and provides the incorrect reading. The gage is calibrated for pristine tank walls so any residue would have to be removed. Obviously there is no way to keep the walls perfectly clean all the time. I built a device to calibrate the system for an average amount of scum and it works quite well. I offered this information in the past, but was met with the usual criticism.
