Free firewood.
If you live or camp near a truss-making plant (no, not that kind of truss!) you may have a source for all the free firewood you want. Ask if you can help yourself to the scrap pieces in the dumpsters - mostly 2x4, sometimes 2x6/2x8, lengths very rarely over two feet. Virtually all the wood I get from our local plant is fir which often makes for a spark-popping fire - fine if you don't mind seeing sparks fly.
Another good source is new house construction sites. Be sure to ask first!
