DW & I hate the steps setup on our RV - when steps are down have to get up on 1st step to unlock/unlatch door, then step down to open. And it's a long step up onto that 1st step (RVs a tall TH). Being too economical to buy one of those extra steps, I got an old pallet from a local hardware store, took the nails out, and used some of the 1/2" thick boards to make a 4x18x24" first step. Travels well right inside the door.
- 1/2" thick (at most) wood makes it surprisingly light
- the wood is oak so it will take a lot of weather abuse
- the wood is a bit on the rough side so there's absolutely no slipping when it's wet
Word of caution. The 1st first step I made was real nice and fancy but a complete failure. I bought 1x6 at the local lumber yard, hole-sawed large holes in it to cut down on weight, router-rounded all the edges, and painted black enamel. It might have been okay without the paint...with the paint it's slipperier (spellchecker says that's right but it sure doesn't look it) than hot greased snot with just the smallest amount of rain or dew on it.
