Original poster of the camera trick here...
a. Of course you should have some sense about the personal information you divulge. No social security numbers, home addresses, etc. I'm thinking email address. ANY contact info is better than none.
b. You might be surprised what people will turn in. I work at a busy attraction, and I've had wallets with hundreds of dollars, big honking diamond rings, Rolex watches, and very expensive cameras and phones turned in. Despite what you hear on the news, there are still a lot of decent, honest people out there.
c. If it's any kind of organized attraction or business that finds your camera, they're going to look through the pictures looking for clues. If it's a private citizen that finds it, I suggest that the "snoop reflex" is VERY compelling, and even good, honest people will look through the pics "looking for clues. :)
I suggested this trick because it breaks my heart to see wedding, graduation, and vacation photos that I really want to get back to the rightful owner, but have no clue how to find them. Some of the SD cards in the cameras have literally thousands of pictures on them.
