What is the shell, and what is the stuffing?
Hmm....... I am entering the fire starting methodology I've learned on a woodstove home heating system forum and a firewood forum I participate in on the net....
The base of my firestarters is melted candles. The other ingredient is "wood noodles". "Wood noodles" are created when you have an overly large round of wood and it is too large (heavy) to get up onto your wood splitter. You lay the wood on the ground, bark side down and commence to chainsaw the piece into quarters then you can pick up your 1/4's and get them onto the log splitter. Sawing this way does not create 'sawdust', it creates 'wood noodles'. This manner is sawing 'with the grain' (= wood noodles) instead of the normal 'cross grain' (= saw dust).
As I said previously, we use these to start the fire in our home woodstove so they are not specifically made for camping but a fire is a fire, right? :)
As to why we don't just use newspaper: We haven't subscribed to any newspaper for about 10 yrs. :) so newspaper is not a commodity in our household.
If anyone would like to see the entire process, I do have a series of photos I could post....
By the way, each of my firestarters burns for at least 5-8 minutes which can make the most stubborn fire 'start' with just one light. :)
