We use a wood-burning stove in the basement level and there is no way we would go to the trouble of using sticks and newspaper. We haven't subscribed to a newspaper in years and I don't even allow charcoal starter on the grill because of the smell and the chemicals so sure am not going to use in our fireplace/stove. We get something from LLBean or similar, fat wood (?) which is expensive and then use a small fire starter. We live in a forest so have access to plenty of wood. I like the idea of making up a bunch of non-chemical starters and having them on hand. I need to read the posts again, but I would think you could use regular paraffin rather than candles but you can buy large candles very cheap with no smell. To me, messing with newspapers and kindling is a lot more trouble.
